Tamar Avraham, a Jewish guide who is a native of Germany, led on October 1 our tour of Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. She also guided us to the top of Mount Herzl, named for Theodor Herzl, the Hungarian founder of modern political Zionism. We learned how the hopes of the State of Israel are built upon the sorrowful experience of the holocaust, about which Israel has vowed “never again.”
